From Our Family to Yours We are a 5th generation small -family ranch based in Atascosa, Texas. We are enrolled members of the Tap-Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation and our history isn't just rooted in San Antonio and ranching, it's what we do and it’s who we are. Our family and now our children were raised through both our Native American ancestral teachings and hands on programs like 4-H and FFA. Together with formal educations in Animal Science and Native American Studies, we're rooted in tradition along with our methods. We learned that animals, land, and people are all connected. It's how we care for the land, how we show respect for our animals, and how we produce food the right way.
We Chose a Different Path After raising livestock for the conventional market, we saw something that didn’t sit right with us: the growth pushed by hormones, routine antibiotics, medicated feeds and shortcuts that sacrifice quality for speed. We knew our food and our values deserved better. So we combined ancestral knowledge, modern education, and real world experiences to raise animals the way nature intended: Naturally, Sustainably, Humanely and Responsibly. We raise food we proudly feed to our own family.

Why Rancho Seco Cattle Co.?
We moved onto our small 10 acre ranch 25 years ago in our early twenties and made porch friends with our neighbors who were 75 years young. For the next 15 years we spent many an evening listening to their stories about ranch life in Carrizo Springs. The Odens named their ranch "Rancho Seco" (dry ranch) because we always missed the rain. After purchasing their ranch from family members in 2019, we incorporated the name into our families Double Bar A brand to honor both our families traditions and their memory.
What do you feed your livestock?
Our animals are raised on coastal pastures and native grasses with forage-based feeding as the foundation of their diet. We focus on grazing and rotational practices that support healthy animals, soils, and grasslands.
Our steers are raised on forage, with a focus on coastal hay and native grasses. When needed, we supplement with ingredients that stay true to our grass-fed approach, such as alfalfa and nopales. (Yes, they absolutely love cactus!) Our mama herd is also forage-based but during times of drought we provide a plant-based ration to make sure we are providing the best nutrition for both cow and calf.
Our pigs are raised on pasture and supplemented with locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and grains. This helps support their well-being and contributes to flavorful, high-quality pork.
Our broilers and laying hens are raised on pasture and fed a locally milled all-natural, non-soy feed with plenty of fresh water. This approach helps us raise healthy birds and produce quality meat and eggs.
How do you care for the herd?
We use low-stress handling (Temple Grandin style), close observation, and rotational grazing to support animal health and natural behavior. These practices help keep the herd resilient and the land productive.
What makes your ranch different?
Our ranch is guided by Indigenous values of respect, balance, and responsibility to the land and animals. We continually educate ourselves through workshops and agricultural based programs that help to improve our knowledge, our herd and the land while staying focused on these values. We aim to produce good food while honoring the herd, the soil, and our community.
